Early Life
Hansjörg Alfred Salmony was born in Cologne (Köln) on February 16, 1920. His mother Thekla (Thea) Gertrud Salmony (1889-1944), née Rosenthal, descended from a religious Jewish Colognian family. His father Alfred Theodor (1886-1942) also came of a religious Jewish family with roots in Hadamar (Sauerland) for many generations, later also in Koblenz (on the Moselle and Rhine). Salmony’s father, however, was not brought up a religious Jew nor was Salmony raised in the Jewish tradition.
The takeover of the National Socialist Party in 1933 determined the later course of the Salmony family.
