A Philosopher’s Struggle with Death, Power, and Evil
A number of Salmony’s lectures focus on a systematic question. It is in these lectures that his originality and the strength of his ideas come to their fullest expression, in particular in "Zum philosophischen Problem des Todes" (first held in Sommer 1962), "Das philosophische Problem des Bösen" (first held in Sommmer 1964), and "Über die Macht" (first held in Winter 1970/71 and later renamed “Macht und menschliche Natur“). These lectures reflect his own deep pessimism. Salmony, however, never falls into sarcasm or cynicism traps when he explores the intricate layers and facets of human nature. His lecture on “The Philosophical Problem of Evil“ even manages to weave in a reflection on “Kölsch“ (Colognian) humor.
